Casting is so essential to the success of a new comedy. Because, and this is more key for a sitcom than any other kind of show, I want to hang out with the people of this world. Eliza is a self-obsessed, tech-driven narcissist—the kind of person who has more Facebook friends and Twitter followers than real human connections. Dooley, a woman similarly out of touch with the world around her and uneducated in social grace. He forces a complete makeover, making her presentable to the executive world in which he runs not unlike Henry Higgins did to Eliza Doolittle.

As much as my critical mind finds some of the jokes easy and the characters remarkably broad, Gillan finds something vulnerable and relatable in a character that other actresses would have merely turned into an unlikable monstrosity. Most importantly, Gillan and Cho have solid chemistry, as any good Eliza and Henry need to have to make the transformation of both characters complete.

Romantic comedies demand likable characters. We need to root for our hero and heroine to find love with one another.

Title: Manhattan Love Story The unfiltered internal monologues of a young man and a young woman are exposed as they begin a new relationship together. The title alone gives the viewers three reasons to hate the show, but the two leads more than make it completely likable. In the acting world, model Analeigh Tipton made heads turn when she played the lovable babysitter in Crazy, Stupid, Love. She had this beautiful essence that allowed her to portray the innocent side of puppy love but also the naughty side as she attempted to explore her sexuality with an older man.

This show’s hook is the internal monologue as both characters get to narrate their thoughts as they go about their day. It works on a simple comedy level, but it also works by connecting the audience to the leads instead of just falling in love with them. Tipton’s Dana represents the insecure side of people.

So it must be a Manhattan Love Story. Let me just begin by saying, it seems so weird to me that in a city like New York, there seriously is such a huge focus on just the white people who live there. A show which seemingly only comes off even a smidge unique since we can hear the thoughts of the couple we can focus on. However, being that this is a comedy, naturally said thoughts are a mixed of feelings you would have and thoughts spoke just for the sake of a laugh.

Dana Analeigh Tipton comes off as your usual small town girl who just came to the big city.

‘Selfie,’ ‘Manhattan Love Story’ And The New Fall Comedies To Embrace And Avoid. By Maureen Ryan. 09/30/ PM ET. |. Updated Sep 30,

Recently, I posted a roundup of reviews of the new dramas on the broadcast networks, and that list of capsule reviews was preceded by some thoughts on the State of the Network Drama. This roundup doesn’t require much of an introduction, because all you really need to know is that most of the new fall comedies are not that great. And far too many of them have burly, bearded, often red-haired friends wandering around for no particular reason. Why this crime against gingers, television?

There are a few bright-ish spots including “Black-ish,” which I’ve already reviewed , but generally, the comedies I’ll watch on the broadcast networks this fall will be the returning gems. The new stuff is constrained by something critic Alan Sepinwall has repeatedly and rightly complained about : Networks want high-concept premises for their comedies, but those premises often hobble attempts to make the shows good in the long term.

Of course, many of the good network comedies airing currently were once were struggling newbies, so there’s a chance these shows could turn things around. Except for “Manhattan Love Story,” that is, which needs to fall into a subway grate and not come out again. Yet in a larger sense, “Selfie” does not really work, because there are a lot of unpleasant and judgmental elements lurking in its premise.

Gillan plays Eliza, a social-media loving career gal who is continually shamed regarding every aspect of her existence, and John Cho plays Henry, an executive who takes on the allegedly arduous task of making her over. It’s fine that Eliza’s self-absorption is called out, but the big problem with “Selfie” is that it doesn’t make it clear that Henry is just as much in need of a personality intervention, and thus all the “comedy” leans on jibes at the expense of Gillan’s character.

Ultimately, the whole enterprise comes off as shrill and mean-spirited, though given the talent of the cast and given that Emily Kapnek “Suburgatory” is at the helm, I’m hoping this show is able to course correct. Much of my podcast rant about this show centered on its highly questionable casting: Jake McDorman is a bland dudebro with little presence; Analeigh Tipton is equally charisma-free.

ABC has broken up with its new relationship comedy, “Manhattan Love Story,” cancelling the sitcom created by Jeff Lowell after four episodes. The ABC Studios comedy, which focused on the inner monologues of characters who were embarking on a new relationship, is the first of the new fall shows to be cancelled. Tuesdays after fellow new rom-com “Selfie,” had a weak ratings start and lukewarm reviews, with Variety’s Brian Lowry writing that the narrative device was “straight out of the subtitled feeling-out exchange in ‘Annie Hall"” — even if leads Analeigh Tipton and Jake McDorman were appealing.

Despite being the first to drop the axe this season, ABC has had good luck in some of its other new properties and recently gave full-season orders to new comedy “Black-ish” and drama “How to Get Away with Murder.
