A significant update has dropped in Dota 2, bringing with it multiple changes to the ranked matchmaking experience. In , Valve introduced the ranked role system which assigned players to specific in-game roles. This spiked the length of queues for players, a fact that Valve tried to address in multiple ways. The change ultimately did little to improve matchmaking times or the quality of games. This prompted Valve to roll back some of these changes, but it is unclear if this will make things any better. Having Ranked Roles matchmaking alongside Ranked Classic could serve to divide the dwindling Dota 2 player base. Alongside these changes come a shift in how MMR is adjusted from winning or losing a ranked game. Players now enter a ranked game poised to either win or lose a fixed amount of MMR.
Updates made to the Matchmaking System in Dota 2
Valve released yet another matchmaking update for Dota 2 today. The developer is fully committed to improving the matchmaking experience for several players, addressing key issues that arose from the most drastic change since the advent of the game. Among the issues noted were high MMR party queues, solo and party matchup combinations, a rework of the medal system, and the new addition of a post-match evaluation that informs players of statistics like the average queue time and behavior score.
Valve announced the changes in Dota 2’s official blog site: “[The] Based on the new standard, the matchmaking system can encourage all.
Valve recently introduced some small but radical changes to the ranked matchmaking of Dota 2. This is not the first time the company has changed its matchmaking and not the last. Valve has implemented a pentagon graph that has empty bars. The impact of these changes will be visible after a reasonable time has passed. However, there are certain things that are clear. Players having a huge difference in their skill level for different roles may abuse this system. This will be unfair, as there is a MMR difference between both roles.
The developers have not made it clear the amount of change they have made between different roles, which leads to a big confusion and uncertainty. Valve is trying hard to make matchmaking as fair and player friendly as possible. They have already made many changes to matchmaking and are practically testing every new method they implement to see which ones the best for the future of Dota 2.
Dota 2’s latest update makes more MMR changes and cuts off chat for toxic players
Matchmaking is the process through which the system groups players into opposing teams for public games modes. With the exception of bot games, matchmaking is mostly determined by matchmaking ratings MMR. Unranked or casual games do not display matchmaking ratings and still doesn’t track your MMR for solo and party queues.
Today’s update includes some engineering changes to the core matchmaking system to allow for bigger changes and better analytical.

As per usual, the update includes new cosmetics and balances. Instead of two separate ranks, there are now five role ranks and an overall MMR foundation system. Players will have a single rank system that uses handicaps for each of the five ranked positions. Essentially, every player automatically has five rank roles. They can queue for a ranked match. And if they queue with their most successful rank role, they’ll encounter opposing player’s that are equivalent or much higher in skill level.
But when a player queues with a weaker role rank, they’ll face opponents that are lower in rank. Every time a player starts their game, they’ll see their adjusted badge levels that were used to start the matchmaking and the badge levels of their teammates. No matter what rank role you queue in, at the end of the game, your main rank will be updated regardless.
Ultimately, your single matchmaking rank is the foundation for all the role ranks. However, the waiting time for different role rank queueing will differ significantly.
Dota 2: Continuing Matchmaking Updates
We understand that some players, especially at the high end, have experienced a significant drop in matchmaking quality as a result of our recent iterations. We are committed to making matchmaking as good as it can be. For any party that includes an Immortal player, every player in that party will be considered the same rank as the highest player in that party.

A comprehensive matchmaking system is an important factor in being able to enjoy playing Dota, regardless of which hero or role you prefer. Matchmaking involves various tradeoffs and our goal is to find the best balance between all the different factors. There are two major aspects with this change: 1 the teamplay and social aspect and 2 the value and correctness of the MMR value. For the teamplay aspect: We think it is really crucial for you to not have a disincentive to play with your friends.
The game currently overly emphasizes playing solo and establishes a strong social reward mechanism for this, which causes many players to prefer playing alone than with friends. We believe that bias has over time caused more negativity and unhappiness when playing Dota. Furthermore, Dota is a very teamplay heavy game and we want to consider that aspect a bit more strongly in the hierarchy of matchmaking values.
For the correctness of the MMR aspect: We recognize that there is a tradeoff here on the mmr data quality if the match has solo mmr numbers with party mmr numbers, however we feel that the impact of that data noise is much smaller than even we initially considered it to be early on and generally with how it is discussed online. Most of the issues related to this we think we can solve with better algorithms.
Another common case is playing with a friend who has a higher mmr than you, expecting that it will cause your mmr to go higher. While that has been at least partly true in previous matchmaking system iterations, our most recent version does a fairly good job of addressing this. We have enough data to form matches that cause you to have an even chance to win by carefully choosing the opponents that have a similar makeup.

Like any other competitive online multiplayer title these days, Dota 2 has its very own ranking system integrated into its own matchmaking queue. That’s why it hurts to say that the changes to matchmaking have made it thoroughly painful to play. I want to briefly outline the changes that were made, what I believe the intent of the changes was, and why they completely failed and have made Dota’s matchmaking a complete and utter shitshow. The intent of this change was to encourage playing dota as a much more team oriented game, Valve said as much in their blog post. Solo matchmaking was its own meta compared to actual competitive games because of the “pick up game” nature.
The issue lies in one simple factor: Smurf accounts.
The Dota 2 ranked roles update
Valve released a new Dota 2 update for the ranked matchmaking in march , read here what is new and why the changes have been made! From now on Dota 2 players will have only one single MMR rank instead of the distribution into support and core ranks. To ensure well balanced games the ranked queues are still based on picking a role before you start a match.
We are making this change because the slow/fast queue concept has not been successful in producing good quality games. The end result was.
The new Ranked season is here. The changes in this update will be rolled out gradually over the next two days as we iron out bugs. The calibration part of the new season will begin this Thursday. One big observation that we had since the previous update was that matches with misaligned roles had a meaningful impact on game quality. An example of this is when the mid player for one team has the highest rank on their team, and the mid player on the other team has the lowest rank.
This tended to cause games to be really volatile and not enjoyable. In the past we used to prioritize rank spread between the two teams as one of the main criteria for the matchmaker to judge success, however as part of this update we are changing its priorities.

DOTA 2 (@DOTA2) October 10, High MMR party ranks have received some massive changes. Any party with a Divine or Immortal rank.
Valve has introduced a new update for the matchmaking system in Dota 2. Since we believe that they have rolled to a lot of changes in a very less time. The MOBA developer is trying to make the system as smooth as possible since it wants it community to have an enjoyable experience. It has been addressing the most important issues since the start of the MMR system.
The issues that were highlighted by them were the matchmaking errors in solo and party queues. The developers also had to re-configured the medal system while adding a new post-match evaluation system for behavior score and average queue time. The high MMR ranks have received considerable changes. The party queues that are ranked Immortal and Divine now are presumed to be in the same matchmaking bracket. The pros and high ranked Immortal players can now battle it out in exciting matches.
The downside to these changes is that smurf can now easily climb to high ranks. The solo matchmaking has also witnessed major changes as Valve will now set a hard limit for any solo player to match against a party of two or more player. Meaning that a party of 4 to 5 players will now only match with duos or trios so that matchmaking is more fair.
